What to Do When Friends + Family Don’t Like Your Choices EP#191

What to Do When Friends + Family Don’t Like Your Choices EP#191

.

______

Have you ever felt sure about a choice you’ve made only to be met with friends and/or family who make it abundantly clear that they do not like your choice? And, then you start second guessing the choice you made? Yeah. Me too.

Recently, a listener wrote in to the show expressing a similar issue: She had made the choice not to go to a family function (which sounded like hell to her) and her sister completely gave her the cold shoulder for three [fucking] months. When the sister finally came clean about what was bothering her, she not only didn’t listen to any reasoning, but called the listener selfish and accused her of always doing what she wanted to do no matter what.

Well, shit. So, this listener wanted to know, “How do I avoid being perceived as selfish or uncaring when I say no to something others want me to do or when I create boundaries?” You KNOW I had a shit-ton to say on this one, no? In this episode I break down 6 concepts to be aware of so that you aren’t totally and completely destroyed if mom doesn’t like your choice of mate or if your sister doesn’t think you should take that job. And more importantly, so you don’t keep changing your behavior just to make everyone else happy.

This pod explores:

  • The shitty thing about personal development (WHAT? I know, right!?)
  • How to allow yourself to be bummed-the-fuck-out by other people’s responses to you without making it mean you did something wrong
  • How to get laser focused on what is your responsibility and how to let everything else go (Um… instead of obsessing)
  • How to know who you can and can’t share information with

Your Go-To, Self-Sabotaging Behaviors & How to Change Them with Guestie Andrea Owen EP#190

Your Go-To, Self-Sabotaging Behaviors & How to Change Them with Guestie Andrea Owen EP#190

.

______

Unless you’re some kind of alien species living amongst us humans (in which case… #creepy), you undoubtedly have a litany of go-to behaviors or actions you employ when you straight-up Don’t. Want. To. Deal. In Millennial language, the shit you do when you Literally Can’t Even.

Sometimes it can be “noble” go-to behaviors like over-working, throwing yourself into parenting, or working out like Jillian on crack instead of really looking at what it is that you don’t want to feel. And perhaps you have some not-so-noble behaviors like blaming everyone else (like your ex) or binging out on some Ben n’ Jerry’s or drinking a bottle of wine all by yourself… simply because being with the guilt/self-loathing/embarrassment/grief/overwhelm/sadness, just feels waaaaaay too unbearable.

If any of that sounds eerily familiar, no need to bust out more Bn’J’s or start a new business to distract yourself… In fact, it just means that you’re fucking human. And just like most human behavior, the more you understand it and have compassion for it, the more you can create empowering change. In this week’s episode I’m joined by my bestie (and total badass) Andrea Owen where we discuss how to identify your go-to, self-sabotaging behaviors and how you can start altering them for the better.

This pod explores:

  • How to figure out what your go-to, self-sabotaging behaviors are (including some you may be shocked by!)
  • What the 80/20 rule is an how it applies to dealing with uncomfortable emotions
  • How blame and control tend to be easy go-to’s when you’re overwhelmed/stressed/pissed and how to channel (not squash) that energy for the better
  • Why you MUST embrace self-sabotage if you ever want to create change

Combating “All or Nothing” Thinking EP#189

Combating “All or Nothing” Thinking EP#189

.

______

__________
If you consider yourself a recovering perfectionist, you may relate to the idea of “all or nothing” thinking… as in, you either have to work out 5 days a week for an hour each time, OR… you do nothing at all. Or maybe you find yourself slaving away on a serious work project, committed to finite details (that ultimately don’t matter) because you just could never allow someone else to do it at 80% or allow yourself to finish the project anything short of PERFECT.

Oftentimes, we make our job significantly harder not by setting lofty goals, but by the rules and criteria we make IMPERATIVE in accomplishing those goals… essentially creating the rules of “how” things must be done. It’s not just about throwing an awesome party, but rather exactly HOW that party must be executed. As in, slaving away on home-made gifts for the attendees, baking everything from scratch, and shampooing your carpet… all by yourself, until the middle of the night, and lashing out at your spouse who just doesn’t “get it”. Um… so yeah, I know a bit about this process. [embarrassed-face emoji]

If this sounds eerily familiar, have a listen to this episode where I teach you how to figure out when your ambitions are serving you and when they are making your life miserable. You’ll learn a 4-step process to evaluate your own behavior and start shifting your mental conversation in order to create much more peace and relief. #yesplease

This pod explores:

  • The common over-achieving, perfectionist pull to set the bar impossibly high and what to do about it.
  • How to craft a name for this behavior so you can catch yourself in the middle of a disempowering “all or nothing” spiral
  • The way you sell yourself short by only have two options: all in or all out
  • The perfect go-to mantra you’ll need to encourage yourself through the process

Is My Partner a Manipulator? Wait… Am I a Manipulator? EP#188

Is My Partner a Manipulator? Wait… Am I a Manipulator? EP#188

.

______

Ever have conversations with your spouse and think, “Damn, that statement sounded awfully manipulative… is he just trying to get me to do what he wants? Am I crazy for over-thinking this?” Or maybe it’s the other way around… Maybe you offer up some advice to your partner, possibly suggesting a workout he may dig or how work could be smoother for him, and he yells, “You’re always trying to change me!” And, you’re like, “Um. No. You were just bitching about work, so naturally I told you what you should do about it!” And, you keep butting heads… keep having breakdowns in communication. And, it stifles your connection, trust, and vulnerability.

Recently, a listener wrote in to the show asking how to handle being called “a manipulator” by her partner when she is pretty sure she isn’t one. I mean… how does one know if one is a manipulator? Perhaps you have come up against similar communication barriers with your partner. Maybe you haven’t been called “a manipulator” per se, but perhaps you’ve been accused of “nothing ever being good enough” or “always trying to change me”. Most of the time, what the two of you are up against is a serious disconnect in communication… and listening to one another. Have a listen and learn the difference between straight-up manipulation and an un-intentional breakdown in communication.

This pod explores:

  • The number one factor to look for in order to figure out if your partner is a manipulator
  • How your unsolicited advice is likely killing the communication in your partnership
  • How to figure out if your intention is pure (Hint: It usually is, it’s just expressed poorly)
  • EXACT phrasing to use to approach challenging topics with your partner without coming across bossy, forceful, or manipulative

How to “Accept” Yourself without Being Complacent EP#187

How to “Accept” Yourself without Being Complacent EP#187

.

______

___________
Let me ask you a question. What does “self-acceptance” mean to you? If you’re like many people, you may think that if you accept yourself as is, that must mean that you will become complacent and all of a sudden not want to accomplish any goals. If you accept yourself at this weight, does that mean you won’t try to tone up and get into those skinnies? If you accept yourself and you’re not in a job that lights you up, does that mean you’ll resign yourself to die in that damn cubicle?

If any of those thought patterns sound familiar, you are certainly not alone. Many people think that if you choose to love and accept yourself NOW, then you are also accepting complacency and stagnation. In this episode, I debunk this myth and look at how loving and accepting yourself can actually catapult you into action… not only accomplishing goals and dreams, but also having a damn good time on the journey.

If you often say, “I’ll be happy as soon as I lose this last 10 lbs.” or have only motivated yourself through being a big ‘ol bitch to yourself, you need to have a listen and start crafting a different way.

This pod explores:

  • Why you need to separate how you feel about yourself from the goals you want to achieve
  • How to figure out if you’ve been motivating yourself with self-hate and negative messaging (and, yes, I get it, this does get you into action… it just feels like shit)
  • The main thing that HAS TO happen if you’re serious about accepting yourself (and how it relates to cults… I shit you not)
  • How to change your relationship to “self-acceptance” by acknowledging your biggest triggers

Help! My Partner & I Have Totally Different Dreams & Goals EP#186

Help! My Partner & I Have Totally Different Dreams & Goals EP#186

.

______

AA listener wrote to the show expressing concern that “I have different dreams and goals than my partner” and wondered what she should do about this prob. Maybe you can relate. Maybe you have different spiritual beliefs than your partner that often lead to heated conversations. Or maybe you would love to eventually quite your job and travel the world, but your spouse doesn’t ever want to move. Maybe you’re a vegan, and your spouse’s carnivorous ways hurt your heart. Or perhaps you would love babies and your partner doesn’t want to touch that with a 9-foot pole.

Having different life goals, visions, beliefs, and dreams than your partner can certainly be divisive, but it doesn’t always have to mean the end of the union. In this episode I offer three major concepts you can use to look at the big picture of your relationship and see if the issues you are battling in your relationship are deal-breakers. I also end the episode with a handful of journal prompts you can use to evaluate the state of your unique situation.

Have a listen, um… because thinking that things would totally be awesome if only your spouse would change sure isn’t working. Amiright?!

This pod explores:

  • Why you don’t always have to understand one another in order to support each other
  • What-the-hell core values are and why they are imperative to navigating opposition in your relationship
  • The difference between compromise and settling (hint: one is awesome, and one not so much)
  • How to grow together and individually, even if you aren’t always on the same page

Learning to Trust When You Really Don’t Want To EP#185

Learning to Trust When You Really Don’t Want To EP#185

.

______

This week’s episode comes to you courtesy of a listener submission asking how to cultivate trust in relationships when one has created a reality of building up walls and allowing very few people “in”. Sound familiar?

Learning to trust? Sure. I’ll get right on that.

Maybe you can relate. Maybe people say nice things to you and you always question their motives. Maybe you have a tendency to distrust your partner because your ex was an asshole. Maybe you have a hard time making new friends because deep down you’re worried about being judged or abandoned like your parents did to you in your youth. If any of that sounds eerily familiar, babe, you are certainly in good company.

This week, I look at 6, specific [baby] steps you can take in order to alter your relationship to trust without, you know, feeling super unsafe and freaking-the-fuck-out. Believe it or not, you may actually have a ton of evidence around you that people can be trusted… you just haven’t been looking for that “proof”. Have a listen and learn how to know who to trust, what that actually looks like, and what sweet connection awaits you when you do.

This pod explores:

  • Why you need to stop saying “I have trust issues”
  • How to forgive those who have caused you to distrust, even though you’re still pissed at them
  • How to gather evidence of the trustworthiness all around you
  • The #1 phrase to listen for that your inner shit-talker will surely start using on you as you begin this process

True or False: Managing Your Inner Critic Edition EP#184

True or False: Managing Your Inner Critic Edition EP#184

.

______

__________
If you’ve been involved in personal development or self-help for awhile, surely you have come into some conflicting information around managing your inner critic, what that actually means, and how to really do it. Although it’s #amaze that there are so many people spreading positive messages out there, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t some seriously problematic ideas being conveyed about what it means to “successfully” contend with your inner voice.

If you’ve seen memes floating around Facebook or Insta telling you to just love and accept yourself and speaking kindly to yourself and all your problems will magically disappear, honey you are not alone. And, it can feel downright discouraging and defeating when you actually DO start speaking kindly to yourself and the heavens don’t part and make way for unicorns giving out ice cream. In this episode, I thought it would be fun to do a little game of True or False with Mr. Smith to see if I’ve been accurately painting a realistic picture of what it really looks like to manage an inner critic on the regs.

Have a listen, play along, and see how you do on this round of seven True or False statements! You’ve got this!

How to Make Shit Happen in 2017 EP#183

Free Worksheet

.

______

If you’re like most people, you have an overwhelming sense of excitement and ambition come the new year. Also like most people, perhaps you hit Jan gang-busters-style, but when Feb comes around you have slowly begun to lose steam, fervor, and action. Many people (and maybe YOU) enter the New Year with tons of plans and intentions, but somehow end up a bit off track sooner than later.

In this episode, I address the biggest obstacles people unknowingly establish for themselves when crafting New Year’s goals and “resolutions”. Yep, you read that right… many people actually make their job a shit-ton harder by not setting themselves up for success to begin with. I also share my personal planning tool I use to be sure I establish solid goals in aaaaall areas of my life (not just fitness and money… but, yes, those too). Be sure to grab your free download so you can plan and organize a seriously epic 2017 by figuring out what categories in which you would like to make headway. Plus, you’ll have a sexy, little worksheet to record all your brilliance!

This pod explores:

  • The two biggest mistakes people make when crafting goals for the new year
  • How to assess where you are in your life now and where you want to be in a year’s time
  • How to create goals that are really about YOUR fulfillment, are totally attainable, and light you up
  • Why you probably don’t want to celebrate your 2016 accomplishments, but you kinda, absolutely MUST

Loving Yourself When You Don’t Love Your Job/Body/Spouse/Life EP#182

Loving Yourself When You Don’t Love Your Job/Body/Spouse/Life EP#182

.

______

Ever find yourself saying, “As soon as I get a new job, then I’ll be happy” or “If I could just shed this extra weight, then I’ll really start living” or something similar? Ever wonder how to love yourself when you feel soooo far away from where you want to be?

For many of us, we take the goals we want to achieve and collapse them with our self worth. When we do this, we allow ourselves to stay in a place of self-loathing UNTIL we accomplish our goals instead of allowing ourselves self-love through the journey.

If you aren’t crazy about your current set of circumstances and you know it’s dramatically affecting your self-worth, this episode is just what you need. This pod explores:

  • How to figure out what meaning you’ve assigned to your goals
  • How to love yourself NOW, even if you are unhappy in your current situation
  • How to make your goals 100% in service of YOU
  • Self-talk tips to support your new relationship to the things you want to change in your life
