This relationship had a litany of abuse and behavior that was completely unacceptable, and this listener was definitively ready to cut ties, but wasn’t at all sure how to go about it. Whew! I know. I get it. You were told to never hurt anyone’s feelings. You were told to “not rock the boat”. You were told to “not let people down”. And you took that to heart. When you had a problem with something your bestie said, you swept it under the rug. Don’t rock the boat. When you had probs in the bedroom, you told your bestie and your therapist, but you could neeeever tell your spouse! I mean… that would destroy him/her.

And, you continue this pattern throughout your life. When you’re pissed at your boss, you find co-workers to collude with, but never bring up the issue to the powers that be. When you don’t like how your mother-in-law is butting into your parenting, you bite your lip. And, then maybe have an explosive fight with your partner about it.

Listen, I feel you. For many of us, we have lived our entire lives believing that saying what we really mean is a recipe for disaster and should be avoided at all costs. But here’s the clincher: If you constantly do and say shit instead of saying what you really need/want/feel, you are sending yourself a huge, subconscious message that everyone else’s wants, needs, and opinions are more important than yours. Not to mention that you’re kinda being a liar.

In this episode, I look at six common tactics we employ instead of saying what we really mean, hoping that the other party will be able to read our signs and signals and magically be what we need. How’s that working out? That’s what I thought.

If you’re like most people, chances are you have bought into the idea that if other people like and approve of you, you must be worthy. And conversely, if people don’t like or approve of you, you must be a total failure. If you’ve been rejected by a lover (or a few), it can be easy to come to the conclusion that you are unloveable. If you’ve been passed over for a promotion a time or two, it’s easy to surmise that you are incompetent and simply not “smart enough”.

Whether consciously or otherwise, we tend to create conclusions about our self-worth based off of how other people respond to us. In essence, we think, If I receive a bunch of compliments, that must be proof that I’m worthy and if I receive criticisms that must be proof that I’m a complete loser. And then we live into this belief through our own self talk, behaviors, and what we choose to tolerate. And, trust… no one does this on purpose. No one says, “Let me put my entire self-worth in everyone else’s hands.” Of course not.

This episode explores our natural human tendency to attach ourselves to what others think of us, in turn, radically affecting our self-esteem and self-worth. Have a listen and learn three, easy tools you can use to begin finding your power internally instead of from external approval.

Unless you’ve reached monk-like peace with your body, chances are you have gone to blows with that lovely bag of bones that moves your spirit around this planet. Perhaps it’s your weight, or maybe your skin, or even an ailment or disease, but whatever the case, if you’re like most people, you have found yourself angry at your body… and maybe even downright hateful.

We gain weight; we talk shit to our bodies. We have breakout; we tell the person in the mirror how gross she is. Our health wanes, and we tell our body it is betraying us. We often have vitriolic relationships with our bodies and in turn, with ourselves. And, then we continue to collude with others who hate their hips or arms or we find others who wants to play a game of “you think that’s bad… at least you don’t have…” and it becomes an ailment comparison game. Um… no one really wins that game. We keep the scales in our bathroom and compare ourselves to people on Facebook. All things we can totally control, btw.

In this episode, I look at five steps you can take TODAY to begin healing this broken relationship. And, I’m not going to tell you to just love the extra 50 pounds or “make peace” with your bad back. It just may be a refreshing new perspective you haven’t considered.
